Skills-Based Support

ADHD and Executive Functioning Support

ADHD and executive functioning challenges can make planning, time and follow-through feel unpredictable. A person may know what needs to happen and still struggle to begin or finish.

We help clients break larger goals into manageable steps while addressing the frustration and self-criticism that often build around these patterns.

What it can look like

Executive functioning difficulties can show up as missed deadlines, half-finished chores, lost materials or hours spent trying to begin. Time may feel abstract until a deadline is immediate. Repeated reminders can become conflict, while the child, teen or adult concludes that effort should be enough to make the problem disappear.

  • Losing track of time or underestimating how long tasks take
  • Difficulty starting work even when it matters
  • Beginning several tasks without finishing them
  • Forgetting materials, steps or deadlines
  • Feeling frustrated, ashamed or highly self-critical

Understanding the pattern

Executive functioning skills support planning, working memory, task initiation and flexible problem solving. Repeated difficulty can be mistaken for not caring, which often increases conflict and discouragement.

Planning, working memory, task initiation and flexible problem solving are separate skills, so one person may struggle with some and manage others well. Frustration and self-criticism often build after repeated setbacks. We identify the exact point where a task breaks down instead of labeling the whole person unmotivated.

How we help

We use skills-based CBT to make tasks visible, specific and easier to begin. For children, parent coaching can create clearer routines, prompts and reinforcement while preserving opportunities for independence.

Skills-based CBT may start by turning 'do homework' into a visible first action, estimating its length and choosing a clear stopping point. For children, parent coaching can replace repeated verbal prompts with a short routine and consistent reinforcement. We test supports in the setting where the task actually happens.

Sessions are held by secure telehealth for clients physically located in Florida, from the Panhandle to the Keys. Get in touch to schedule a complimentary 15-minute consultation.

Putting skills into daily life

Practice may include estimating time, choosing the first visible action, using one planning system or creating a realistic finish line. We review which supports actually work in the client's daily environment.

Clients may use one calendar, prepare materials the night before or set a timer for the first five minutes of work. Parents can cue the agreed system, notice initiation and allow the child to complete the next step. Therapy here is skills-based. If you are looking for a formal evaluation, your pediatrician or a psychiatric provider is the right place to start.

Supports are chosen for the actual bottleneck. A visual checklist may help someone who forgets steps, while a body-double session or five-minute start may help with initiation. If a planner is repeatedly abandoned, we simplify rather than add another elaborate system. The goal is a tool the client can retrieve and use on an ordinary difficult day.

Emotional regulation is part of the plan because a forgotten task can quickly become shame, anger or giving up. Clients practice noticing that escalation and returning to the next concrete action. Parents can separate correction from character, describe what needs to happen now and reserve broader problem solving for a calmer time.
