Depression Therapy

Depression can make ordinary routines feel heavy. For teens and young adults, it may appear as irritability, withdrawal or low motivation rather than obvious sadness.

Our team supports depression and mood concerns with practical, evidence-based care that helps clients reconnect with daily life one manageable step at a time.

What it can look like

In teens, depression may appear as irritability, sleeping at unusual times or pulling away from friends rather than visible sadness. A young adult may stop attending activities, fall behind on ordinary tasks or feel unable to start work they care about. Low energy and self-criticism can reinforce each other.

  • Irritability or feeling disconnected from other people
  • Withdrawal from friends, family or usual activities
  • Loss of interest in things that once mattered
  • Low motivation and trouble with follow-through
  • Changes in sleep, energy or daily routines

Understanding the pattern

Depression often appears alongside OCD and anxiety. Avoidance, exhaustion and self-criticism can reinforce one another, making a small task feel much larger than it is.

Depression often occurs alongside OCD and anxiety, and the concerns can interact. Avoidance may shrink sources of connection, while unfinished responsibilities create more discouragement. We look closely at sleep, routines, interests and follow-through to find a starting point that is meaningful and possible now.

How we help

We use CBT to notice unhelpful patterns and behavioral activation to break larger goals into manageable steps. DBT skills support emotion regulation, while values-based work helps clients choose actions connected to the life they want to build.

CBT helps clients notice patterns between thoughts, feelings and actions. Behavioral activation breaks a larger goal into manageable steps, such as showering before noon, opening an assignment or walking outside for ten minutes. DBT skills support emotion regulation, and values-based work keeps action connected to what matters personally.

Sessions are held by secure telehealth for clients physically located in Florida, from the Panhandle to the Keys. Get in touch to schedule a complimentary 15-minute consultation.

Putting skills into daily life

A first step might be returning to one routine, completing part of an assignment or reconnecting with a valued activity. We focus on actions that are realistic enough to repeat rather than waiting for motivation to arrive first.

A client may choose one activity for care, one for responsibility and one for connection, then record what happened before and after each attempt. Parents can support the plan with clear expectations and recognition of effort without turning every conversation into a progress check. We adjust the size of each step when energy changes.

Behavioral activation is not a demand to be productive or cheerful. It uses action to create contact with structure, mastery and connection when depression makes withdrawal feel automatic. We notice barriers, reduce an activity to its smallest useful version and plan when it will happen. Completing that version provides information for the next step, even when mood has not shifted yet.

Weekly sessions provide a place to examine what made follow-through easier or harder without turning a missed step into failure. If a plan was too large, we reduce it. If isolation increased, we identify one reachable point of contact. This flexible review supports momentum while respecting the real effects of low energy and mood.
