Checking OCD and Pervasive Doubt
Did I lock the door? Is the stove off? Did I make a mistake? For people with checking OCD, these questions do not go away after one look. The doubt returns almost immediately, and the checking starts again.
We help people break the cycle of doubt and checking so they can leave the house, finish the assignment and rest.
What it can look like
- Checking locks, windows, appliances or the car again and again
- Rereading homework, emails or texts for errors
- Checking your body or searching online about health worries
- Asking others to confirm that everything is okay
- Mentally reviewing the day to make sure nothing was missed
How it affects daily life
Checking can quietly take over mornings, evenings and work time. People with checking OCD may arrive late, stay up past bedtime, or avoid being the last one to leave the house. Children may take a very long time to finish homework or pack their bag. Many feel embarrassed about how much time they spend checking, even when they know it does not quite make sense.
Families often try to help by checking for their loved one or answering the same question again. These responses come from love, and we help families gently change them together.
Why the doubt comes right back
Checking is meant to bring certainty, but OCD always asks for one more check. Each check teaches the brain that the doubt was important and that it cannot trust memory without proof. The more a person checks, the less confident they often feel.
Reassurance and mental review work the same way. Asking a parent if the door is locked, or replaying the moment you turned the key, are forms of checking too.
How we help
We use Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), the gold standard treatment for OCD. Together we plan exposures that involve checking once, or not at all, and then sitting with uncertainty. You might lock the door and walk away without looking back, or send an email without rereading it.
Over time you practice reducing physical checks, reassurance seeking and mental review. We also build skills for tolerating uncertainty, so you can accept that you do not need to be completely sure to live well. For kids and teens, parents learn how to respond to checking and repeated questions in a supportive way.
