OCD Therapy

Pediatric OCD Therapy

When a child has OCD, the whole family feels it. Mornings stretch out, bedtime becomes a negotiation, and a small change in routine can lead to tears. We help children and their parents understand what is happening and learn a clear, evidence-based way forward.

About 1 in 200 children and adolescents have OCD, and according to the International OCD Foundation, kids often live with symptoms for over 2 years before getting help. Early, specialized support can make a real difference.

What it can look like in children

OCD in children aged roughly 5 to 12 often looks different from OCD in adults. Children may not have words for their fears, so parents usually notice the behavior first.

  • Rituals that must be done a certain way, such as touching, arranging or repeating
  • Big meltdowns when a ritual is interrupted or cannot be finished
  • Repeated "are you sure" questions and a need to hear the same answer again
  • Slow, drawn-out routines at bedtime or before school
  • Avoiding places, objects or activities that set off worry

How we help

Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is the gold standard treatment for OCD, and we adapt it to a child's age and temperament. Together we name the OCD, sometimes giving it a silly nickname, so the child can see it as something separate from who they are.

We build a ladder of small, doable steps, starting with challenges that feel manageable. Exposures happen in session and as between-session practice at home, and we use games, rewards and plenty of encouragement to keep children motivated. Treatment planning is collaborative, so the child has a voice in which steps come next.

Weekly sessions give families steady momentum, and progress is reviewed together as the child builds confidence.

Sessions are held by secure telehealth for clients physically located in Florida, from the Panhandle to the Keys. Get in touch to schedule a complimentary 15-minute consultation.

Why parents are coached alongside the child

Parents are a child's most important support, and OCD often pulls loving parents into the rituals. Answering the same question again, waiting while a routine is redone, or changing plans to avoid a trigger are all natural responses. Over time, though, these accommodations can keep OCD going.

We coach parents on how to respond with warmth while gently stepping back from reassurance and accommodation. Parents learn what to say in hard moments, how to support home practice, and how to celebrate brave steps. When the child and parents are working from the same plan, progress tends to hold.

Frequently Asked Questions

ERP can be adapted for young children. We use simpler language, games and very small steps, and parents play a larger role in guiding practice at home.

Usually yes, with parent time built in. Some sessions may be parent only, especially early on, so we can plan together and coach you on responding to OCD at home.

Sessions are held by secure video. Many children do well practicing exposures in their own home, where OCD tends to show up most.
