Anxiety Therapy
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, or ACT, helps people make room for discomfort while choosing actions connected to what matters. It shifts the goal from controlling every thought or feeling to living with greater flexibility.
Our team uses ACT alongside ERP and exposure work to support a values-aligned life.
What it can look like
A person can spend enormous energy trying not to think, feel or remember something uncomfortable. Plans are postponed until anxiety is gone, and thoughts begin to sound like instructions. ACT shifts attention toward what the person wants their behavior to stand for in that moment.
- Waiting for anxiety to disappear before taking action
- Treating a thought as a command or fact
- Avoiding valued activities because discomfort may appear
- Getting pulled into long arguments with the mind
- Losing sight of personal values while trying to feel certain
Understanding the pattern
Acceptance does not mean liking a difficult experience or giving up. It means making room for what is present so a person can choose a response instead of being directed by avoidance.
Acceptance means allowing an internal experience to be present without approving of it or giving up. Defusion skills help a client notice 'I am having the thought that...' instead of treating the thought as a command. Values provide a direction when comfort cannot provide a reliable decision.
How we help
Clients practice willingness to feel discomfort, stepping back from thoughts and identifying values that can guide action. ACT supports ERP by helping a person approach uncertainty for a meaningful reason.
An early practice might be naming a worry, noticing where discomfort is felt and taking one small action toward learning, connection or independence. During ERP, ACT helps clarify why the person is willing to face uncertainty and leave a compulsion undone. The exposure serves a values-aligned life rather than a demand to feel calm.
Sessions are held by secure telehealth for clients physically located in Florida, from the Panhandle to the Keys. Get in touch to schedule a complimentary 15-minute consultation.
Putting skills into daily life
Practice may involve naming a thought as a thought, noticing sensations without solving them or taking one small step toward connection, learning or independence while anxiety comes along.
Clients can choose a daily action linked to a value and practice carrying unwanted thoughts alongside it. They may thank the mind for its warning, return attention to the task or make room for a sensation without analyzing it. We review whether the action moved life in the chosen direction.
Values are qualities of action, not achievements that can be completed. A student may value curiosity even while feeling uncertain, or a parent may value steadiness during a tense routine. We translate that direction into one observable choice. This keeps acceptance from becoming passive and gives discomfort a context larger than simply trying to make it disappear.
ACT language is adapted for age and preference. A younger client may imagine the mind as a busy storyteller, while an adult may practice observing words without debating them. In both cases, the skill creates distance from the thought and returns the decision to the person rather than to the demand for certainty.
