OCD Therapy
Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP)
Exposure and Response Prevention, or ERP, is the gold standard treatment for OCD. It helps people face fears and uncertainty while changing the compulsions and safety behaviors that keep the cycle going.
ERP is collaborative. We build the plan together, practice in clear steps and adjust the pace based on what the client is learning.
What it can look like
OCD often creates a loop of intrusive fear, distress and a compulsion that brings temporary relief. Checking, washing, repeating, reviewing or asking for reassurance can then become more demanding. ERP addresses both parts of that loop instead of trying to debate every obsession into silence.
- Avoiding people, places, objects or thoughts that trigger fear
- Checking, repeating, washing or reviewing for relief
- Seeking reassurance or asking others to participate in rituals
- Waiting to feel completely certain before moving forward
- Losing time to rituals that briefly lower distress
Understanding the pattern
An exposure means approaching a feared situation, thought or sensation. Response prevention means making a different choice instead of completing the usual compulsion or safety behavior.
Exposure means approaching a feared thought, object, sensation or situation in a planned way. Response prevention means choosing not to complete the usual ritual or safety behavior. The combination gives the brain a chance to learn that uncertainty and discomfort can change without a compulsion.
How we help
We create a step-by-step exposure plan and practice both in session and between sessions. Our article about sitting with it explains why the goal is making room for discomfort rather than forcing it away.
Telehealth lets exposures happen in real home settings where OCD appears. An optional 30-minute exposure block is available for $96 when extra focused practice supports the plan.
We build a step-by-step plan together, beginning with an exercise the client agrees is challenging and manageable. Someone with checking concerns might lock a door once and leave without returning. Practice happens during appointments and between them, with each repetition reviewed for learning rather than perfect calm.
Sessions are held by secure telehealth for clients physically located in Florida, from the Panhandle to the Keys. Get in touch to schedule a complimentary 15-minute consultation.
Putting skills into daily life
Each exposure has a clear purpose and is agreed on in advance. We review what the client predicted, what happened and what they learned while resisting the usual response.
Telehealth allows exposures to involve real sinks, doorways, homework or household routines where OCD appears. Our article about sitting with it explains the purpose of allowing discomfort without solving it. An optional 30-minute exposure block is available for $96 when focused practice supports the plan.
Response prevention is planned as carefully as the exposure itself. Before starting, we identify whether the usual response is visible, such as washing, or internal, such as reviewing. The client chooses what they will do instead and how long they will remain with uncertainty. That clarity makes practice measurable and reduces negotiation with OCD in the moment.
ERP is collaborative rather than surprising or coercive. Clients know the purpose of an exercise, help choose its difficulty and can discuss what would make it more useful. We do not judge success by whether anxiety fell on schedule. The central question is whether the person practiced a different response to uncertainty.
