Unwanted Intrusive Thoughts

Almost everyone has strange or upsetting thoughts from time to time. For people with OCD, those thoughts get stuck. They feel urgent, shameful and impossible to ignore, and a great deal of energy goes into trying to make them stop.

If you are carrying thoughts you are afraid to say out loud, you are not alone, and there is effective help.

What it can look like

  • Unwanted thoughts of a sexual nature that feel wrong or shameful
  • Religious thoughts that feel disrespectful or blasphemous
  • Violent images or urges that are frightening and unwanted
  • Worry that a thought says something terrible about who you are
  • Hours spent analyzing, checking feelings or seeking reassurance

Why shame keeps people quiet

Many people with intrusive thoughts worry that saying them out loud will make them more real, or that others will see them differently. So they stay quiet, sometimes for years, and try to manage on their own. This is especially common for teens, who may not have words for what they are experiencing.

Talking with an OCD-trained therapist can be a turning point. We have heard many kinds of intrusive thoughts and understand them as part of how OCD works. Naming the pattern often brings the first real sense of relief.

A thought is not a wish

Having a thought is not the same as wanting it, believing it or acting on it. Intrusive thoughts often target the things a person values most, which is why they feel so upsetting. The shame that comes with them can keep people quiet for a long time.

How the cycle keeps going

When a thought shows up, it is natural to try to neutralize it: pushing it away, checking your reaction, praying, reviewing or asking someone if you are okay. These rituals bring short relief, but they teach the brain the thought was dangerous, so it returns more often.

How we help

We use Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), the gold standard treatment for OCD, together with acceptance-based skills drawn from ACT and mindfulness. You learn to let thoughts come and go without rituals, mental checking or reassurance. We move at a pace you agree to, and our conversations stay calm, respectful and appropriate for teen clients.

Sessions are held by secure telehealth for clients physically located in Florida, from the Panhandle to the Keys. Get in touch to schedule a complimentary 15-minute consultation.

If you or someone you love is in immediate danger, call 911. For free, confidential support 24/7, call or text 988.
