Scrupulosity: Religious and Moral OCD
Scrupulosity is a form of OCD centered on religion, morality or doing the right thing. People with scrupulosity often care deeply about their faith and values, yet feel tormented by doubt that they have sinned, lied or done something wrong.
Treatment can help you hold your values with more peace and less fear.
What it can look like
- Constant worry about sinning, offending God or being a bad person
- Fear of having lied, cheated or been unfair, even in small ways
- Repeating prayers until they feel said correctly
- Frequent confessing to clergy, parents or friends
- Seeking reassurance that you are good or forgiven
- Avoiding places or situations that might lead to a mistake
When doubt takes over daily life
Scrupulosity can quietly take up hours of the day. A person may replay conversations to check they were honest, avoid decisions for fear of choosing wrongly, or feel unable to rest until they have confessed. Religious practice that once felt meaningful may begin to feel filled with fear.
Many people with scrupulosity feel alone, and some worry that seeking help means their faith is weak. It does not. Getting support for OCD can help you return to your values with more freedom and less anxiety. We welcome clients of all faith backgrounds, and those with none.
Faith and values are not the problem
Our work respects each person's faith and values. We do not question or try to change beliefs. We target the OCD: the doubt, the rituals and the fear that keep a person from experiencing their faith or values the way they want to.
Some clients choose to involve a trusted faith leader in understanding what healthy practice looks like for them. We are glad to support that.
How we help
We use Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), the gold standard treatment for OCD, along with CBT and acceptance-based skills. Exposures are designed collaboratively and within your values, such as praying once without repeating, or allowing a small moral doubt to stay unresolved.
Over time you practice reducing confessing, reassurance seeking and mental reviewing. For children and teens, we coach parents on how to respond to repeated questions about right and wrong with warmth, without adding fuel to the doubt.
Sessions are held by secure telehealth for clients physically located in Florida, from the Panhandle to the Keys. Get in touch to schedule a complimentary 15-minute consultation.
